Straddling
the equator, washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives
are an idyllic tropical retreat. With it’s closest neighbors, India and
Sri Lanka to the east, the Maldivian archipelago has 1,190 small and low
lying coral islands slung over 90,000 square kilometers of tropical sea
offering an astounding variety of attractions that is unparalleled elsewhere.
All the islands are low-lying, usually not more than 1 or 2 metres above
sea level. Sun drenched beaches, coconut palms silhouetted against
magenta sunsets, magnificent atolls with crystal-clear lagoons, and a varied
underwater terrain that hosts one of the richest marine life in the world....
Land surfaces vary
from tiny sand banks and coral patches to real “coral islands”. Few are
more than 1 km long and the largest, Gan island in Laamu Atoll, is about
7.5 kilometres long.
Male, the national
capital island, is about 2 square kms in area including large extents of
reclaimed land. It is slightly north of the country’s mid-point on its
eastern side, about 873 km southwest of Trivandrum, capital of the state
of Kerala in India, and 800 km south-west of Sri Lanka. To the north of
the Maldives are the Indian islands of Lacadive, Minicoy and Amindivi.
The southern-most tip of the Maldives lies just below the equator, and
below this is the Chagos Archipelago, which includes the island of Diego
Garcia.
